Below are articles, videos and other links that connect (in some way) to things 5S Is thinking about...
Labor Day- It's not just a day off... Hello all, just as earth day should be every day, labor day also deserves a lot more consideration than it normarlly receives. Most of us are in debt to people before us who spoke up, stood up and often risked harm to themselves and their families by choosing to fight. Today, 9/3/18, on Labor day, I heard a good interview of a man named Jake Sloan who wrote a book called, Standing Tall: Willie Long and the Mare Islan… The book reveals the background and stories of a group of men in the 60's who fought for the rights of workers of color at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard. 5S will spend some time this year reading and discussing the book Bud Not Buddy, that also focuses a bit on the labor movement in the U.S. and people who fought to end discrimination. The wage gap in our country is still alive and well. Click here for a 2018 article from WBUR about the gaps that still exist.
ELEPHANTS AND MUSIC: Here is a link to a little movie about elephants and music... http://www.musicforelephants.com/it connects because 5S will be thinking about the brain, animal behavior (humans included) and instinct vs learned behavior. Based on the movie, what do you think about the elephants and what they can do and/or what they care about? What surprises you about the movie?
